Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah - is an American actress, rapper and a singer. Queen Latifah's career in the fields of music, film and television has earned her a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens. Both were police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who was a teacher the class at Irvington High School. Her father and mother divorced after Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was raised within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah means gentle and very kind. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was aged eight. Latifah is a very tall 5'10 girl who was in the basketball team of her high school team. The song she sang was Home from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her beatboxing career. Latifah is among the founding members of the Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group of MCs around DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to host Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. The song got the attention to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and, in 1988, released her first track Wrath of My Madness.
